College

thinking about starting a new collegiate chapter of United Sound?

Performances are as unique as each college. You might even do something different each semester.

Can everyone make authentic contributions? YES!

What does the mentorship look like?

STUDENTs in charge

United Sound is intended to be entirely student driven. You’ll choose chapter presidents and we’ll meet with them every month to keep them going! Check out the Chapter Presidents tab in the footer below. Your presidents will design lesson plans, create fun activities, and write modified parts for the New Musicians to play. As a faculty advisor, you primary role are 1) to reserve a rehearsal space, 2) help to advertise the opportunity to all interested parties, 3) coordinate performances with the chapter presidents.

curriculum

Intended to be an “out of the box” solution, the United Sound Method Book and Flash Card use foods and colors to transform the abstract concepts of music.

Rehearsals

Most chapters meet once per week for 45 minutes. A typical semester might look like this:

  • Weeks 1-6: Rehearsals begin in the form of group lessons. The club presidents, moving about the room, offering help where needed. Peer Mentors will help the New Musicians with first notes, sound production, and basic music reading.

  • Week 6: Peer Mentors create modified parts for each New Musician based on aptitude (It may be as simple as a 1-2 note melody)

  • Weeks 7-9: Continuing in group lesson format, students begin to learn the modified part that has been created

  • Weeks 10-14: Continue working in small groups and as an ensemble as you prepare to perform

  • Week 15: 1 Full Ensemble dress rehearsal (including New Musicians, Peer Mentors, and the rest of the members of the school ensemble).

  • Week 16: Perform!
